May Flowers
This week was all about flowers and fiestas! We did lots of flower activities and crafts!
We read a book called the Life Cycle of a flower and learned about the different stages of a flowers life and the different parts of a flower. In the book, it explained that each flower has a seed box. The children were able to find the seed boxes in the fake flowers we had in the sensory box. In the sensory table, there was moon sand, flower pots, and fake flowers. The children observed the flowers and “planted” them in the pots.
For the art projects the children made flower scenes two different ways.
First, the children made flowers using forks. First, the children spread glue on strips of green paper with a glue stick. They placed the “stem” on the paper. Next, the children dipped the fork into paint and pressed it on the top of the paper stem.
The second way was using cupcake liners for the flower and strips of green paper for the stems. First, the children glued the stems on. The children then worked on their scissor skills by cutting the edges of the cupcake liners to make pedals. The children glued the cupcake liner onto the top of the stem. They added a “seed box” by making dots in the middle of the cupcake liner with a brown marker.
One of the projects was not a flower. Monday was “Cinco de Mayo.” We talked about the holiday that is celebrated in Mexico. We read a book about the parties they have on the 5th of May. We made our own version of a “maraca” which is a Mexican instrument. The children filled plastic eggs with popcorn kernels. They secured the egg closed with tape. Next, we put a spoon on both sides of the egg and raped the handle of the spoons together. We added some more tape around the spoon part to make sure the egg didn’t fall out of the spoon.
After making our maracas, we used them during circle time. We listened to a few songs including ”Shake your Maraca” by Little Groove and “I love my Maracas” by Tots with tempo. The children enjoyed playing their maracas to the songs.
On the tables, the children made beautiful flower displays with the plastic flower building toys. They also built houses and towers out of magnet tiles for little care bear and unicorn toys.
At the easel, the children engaged in free paint with various colors. On the other side they arranged garden scenes using a garden themed felt set.
On the rug, the children played with a plastic car ramp. They took turns putting cars down the tracks and changing the light to “red, yellow or green.” We talked about what each color meant. Green means go, yellow means slow down and red means stop.
We also had a mystery reader come visit our classroom to read a book!
